Packing is often the most dreaded activity associated with a move. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind when tackling this formidable task so it becomes more enjoyable. Prior to packing for your move, it is a good idea to clear out and dispose of all clothes, furniture and fixtures that you no longer need or want. Donating these items to local charities or holding a garage sale are great ways to get rid of these things. When packing, try to keep the following supplies on hand: a variety of boxes, permanent markers, bubble wrap, newspaper and tissue, tape, scissors, and a tape measure. Be sure to use sturdy boxes and containers that can be secured tightly.

Begin your packing as early in the moving process as you can. Start with rooms you don't use as much and try to pack completely room-by-room. Some people find it helpful to keep an inventory of items they are taking with them. This will allow you to quickly identify missing items when the move is complete and it will help you to locate misplaced items when unpacking.

If you are packing electronics, try to use the original packaging that came with the equipment. If you are removing any hardware from furniture or electronics, tape the hardware to the objects they are removed from. It is also a good idea to tape cords underneath all electrical appliance.

As a good rule of thumb, avoid loading more than 50 pounds into one box (and remember to lift with your knees, not your back). Be sure that you label each box (on the top and the sides) with the following: which room it goes in, if it's fragile and if it should be loaded last so it will be unloaded first. Contents of boxes can be cushioned with packing materials such as bubble wrap, newspaper or tissue. If you are using newspaper, make sure you don't wrap it around items that can be tarnished by the ink. You can even use items like towels, pillows and blankets to wrap fragile items. Packing items tightly will prevent them from shifting as they are moved.

When packing books, try to use smaller boxes so that you don't exceed your weight limit. Packing the books end-to-end will preserve space. If they smell musty, lightly sprinkle talcum powder between the pages and wrap the books before packing. If you leave these books stored for a couple of months after the move, the smell will be eliminated.

To make life easier, have rugs and draperies cleaned before the move and leave them wrapped up for the move. Be sure to pack medicines in a watertight container. If you can, avoid packing valuables...instead carry them with you for safekeeping. If it is necessary to pack valuables, be sure to do it yourself and do not allow the movers to pack these items. If you are going to be moving any unusual plants, check with your local U.S. Department of Agriculture for regulations regarding moving plants from one state to another. Many states have restrictions on certain plants to prevent importing bugs or pests that can destroy valuable cash crops. Also, if possible, do not pack flammable goods or heat sensitive items like candles, records, audio and video tapes, computer disks, propane tanks, aerosol cans, oil based paints, and certain cleaning fluids.

If you'll be putting boxes into storage, be sure to pack according to the seasons so you don't have to open all of the boxes in the unit to find what you need.

Finally, plan ahead for what you'll need the first day after your move. Packing a separate bag with your toiletries, a change of clothes, etc. will avoid unnecessary scrambling or a run to the local store. Keep these tips in mind when packing for your move and it will be a breeze!
